How the scorecard works

The scorecard asks twelve questions across four areas that matter most to investors, lenders and acquirers: board composition, meetings and information, risk and compliance, and strategy and succession. Each answer is scored from 0 to 3, giving an overall maturity score and a score for each area.

What your score means

  • 80–100%: Board-ready. Strong, embedded governance — focus on continuous improvement and external evaluation.
  • 60–79%: Established. Good foundations with a few gaps to close before fundraising or exit.
  • 35–59%: Developing. Some structure, but gaps that create risk and slow decisions.
  • 0–34%: Early stage. Governance is largely informal — common in founder-led businesses and very fixable.

The scorecard is a quick self-assessment, not a formal audit. For an independent review of your board, see our Governance Advisory & Compliance Review or read how to run an effective board meeting.
